Provisional application of the new social security convention with the United Kingdom as of 1.11.2021

01.11.2021 - The new social security convention with the United Kingdom will be applicable provisionally from 1 November 2021. It coordinates the social security systems of the two contracting states as the CH-EU Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons is no longer applicable as a result of Brexit.

Since the UK's withdrawal from the EU on 1 January 2021, social security relations between Switzerland and the UK are no longer governed by the CH-EU Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, but entitlements already acquired are guaranteed by the CH-EU Agreement on Citizens' Rights.

In order to regulate their social security relations again in a targeted and comprehensive manner, the two states have concluded a new bilateral convention. The new social security convention grants insured persons largely equal treatment and facilitated access to social security benefits. It avoids double insurance and insurance gaps for persons who come into contact with the social security systems of both states. The agreement also facilitates the temporary posting of workers in the other state.

The new convention will be applicable provisionally from 1 November 2021. It will enter into force definitively as soon as the parliaments of both states have approved it.
